One of Hadyn Rutter's controversial opinions is that the rules of golf are too complicated for everyday use.

Most golfers know the main rules but cannot possibly know the thousands of minor nuances and interpretations of these rules - and therefore they should be made irrelevant to everyday golf.

In social golf, many golfers adopt a sensible and practical approach when confronted with a difficult rules issue - for example 'just drop a ball here' rather than identify the nearest point of relief, drop within 1 or 2 club lengths and then allow the ball to roll another club length (!!) or even worse, go back 300 yards to the tee and replay the ball!!

The rules of golf as published by the authorities and faithfully observed in major championships are the cornerstone of the game and should not be changed.

However, players should have the option to play by a simpler and easily memorized set of rules for everyday social golf amongst friends - provided these in no way change the fundamentals of the game of golf.

This is not about changing the rules... but about providing a choice of rules.
